Honda recalls 36,000 vehicles in US on corrosion defect

CHICAGO: Honda on Friday announced the recall of nearly 36,000 vehicles in the United States because of a defect which could lead to excessive corrosion in areas where road salt is used extensively.

"In areas where road salt is extensively used, the forward mounting bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link may suffer excessive corrosion," the Japanese automaker said in a statement.

"This may cause the lower link bracket to become detached from the frame, affecting vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash."

While a "small number of incidents have been reported related to the issue," Honda said it is not aware of any injuries related to the defect.

The recall affects the 1998-2002 model years of the Passport sport utility vehicles. Inspection and repair of affected vehicles will be performed at Honda dealerships at no charge.

Honda on Thursday announced the recall of about 1.35 million Fit subcompact cars =- including more than 143,000 in the United States to repair a headlight defect.

A fault in the electric wiring between the handle switch and the headlights can cause the low beam to fail to light up, the company said.
