ATHENS: A Greek passenger ship hit a rock and was slightly damaged in the eastern Aegean, but was able to continue to a nearby port under its own power, the Ministry of Merchant Marine said.

The ship, "Theophilos," was carrying 475 passengers when it crashed into the rock near Oinousses island, about 22 kilometres from its destination port on Chios island yesterday, the ministry said.

Ship passengers told Greek TV stations that no one was hurt, but that the rock had left a gash in the ship's hull from which oil appeared to be leaking. They could not say how much was leaking, and authorities did not comment about the oil or give details about the ship's damages.

The crew initially directed passengers to lifeboats, but then called off the evacuation when it became clear the ship could proceed on its own.

It was directed to anchor just outside the small port in Oinousses, just over two kilometres away, where Coast Guard divers would examine the hull breach.

Smaller boats transferred passengers from Theophilos to the port, the ministry said.
