Google phone to cost $179 on Oct. 22

Wireless carrier T-Mobile says the first cell phone running Google's software will cost $179.

NEW YORK: Wireless carrier T-Mobile says the first cell phone running Google's software will cost $179 with a two-year contract when it goes on sale in the US on Oct. 22.

T-Mobile said on Tuesday it will start selling the G1 phone in Britain in November, and other European countries early next year.

As expected, the phone looks something like Apple Inc.'s iPhone, and has a large touch screen. But it complements the screen with a trackball and a slide-out keyboard. It comes tightly integrated with Google applications like Gmail and Google Maps.
