NEW YORK: CanWest Global Communications and Goldman Sachs Group may buy Alliance Atlantis Communications, co-producer of the ‘CSI’ television shows, as early as this week, a person familiar with the purchase said.

Alliance Atlantis, which put itself up for sale in December, may fetch more than C$2 billion ($1.7 billion), according to analysts such as Desjardins Securities’ Carl Bayard. The person with knowledge of the transaction, who declined to be identified because the deal isn’t public, wouldn’t disclose a price.

The purchase might help CanWest revive its Canadian TV operations, whose operating profit fell by about 75% last year as viewers migrated to specialty channels.

Toronto-based Alliance owns 13 of those stations, including the Food Network Canada, as well as the stake in the three hit CSI series, police dramas focusing on forensic crime scene investigations.
