GM sales in US fall 20.4 pc for August
General Motors on Wednesday reported August US sales slumped 20.4 percent from a year ago to 308,817 vehicles, as the auto giant struggled with weak economic conditions and consumer caution.
The top US auto manufacturer said that despite the year-over-year decline, the sales total was its best so far in 2008. Sales were boosted by a new discount program offering "employee pricing" on most models, a plan extended through September 30.
The number of vehicles sold rose 31 percent from July, GM said, with some gains in larger pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
Mark LaNeve, GM North America vice president, said: "With the recent moderation in fuel prices, we're seeing some relaxation of pent-up demand in pickups and utilities."
