Yellowstone’s Rip has finally been replaced in Dutton Ranch, and this new cowboy is taking over his old role

Taylor Sheridan’s expanding neo-Western universe has found a clear successor to one of Yellowstone’s most important ranch roles.

Rip Wheeler, played by Cole Hauser, spent much of Yellowstone as John Dutton’s fiercely loyal foreman, enforcer and right-hand man. But Dutton Ranch has changed the equation. Rip is now running his own operation alongside Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, leaving a vacancy beneath him.

That vacancy appears to have been filled by Azul (J.R. Villarreal).

Azul has taken over Rip’s old position

Rip’s new role is one of the biggest changes in Dutton Ranch. Instead of taking orders from John Dutton, he is now responsible for running his own cattle operation.

That means Rip needs his own trusted ranch hands. Azul and his longtime friend Zachariah (Marc Menchaca) have become important members of Rip’s crew, with Azul increasingly resembling the dependable foreman Rip once was at Yellowstone.

Like Rip, Azul is hardworking, loyal and committed to the ranch owner. He is the kind of cowboy who can be trusted when difficult situations arise.

The major difference is that Rip is now the one giving the orders.

Chet looked like the obvious successor at first

Azul was not initially the only character who appeared capable of carrying on Rip’s legacy. Chet (Hart Denton), the bunkhouse boss at Beulah Jackson’s 10-Petal Ranch, briefly seemed like a darker successor to Rip’s old role.

After witnessing Beulah’s son, Rob-Will (Jai Courtney), kill cowboy Wes (Nakoa DeCoite), Chet takes charge of the other ranch hands. His loyalty to those above him also pushes him toward violence.

In Season 1, Episode 2, Chet attacks two cowboys, hospitalizing one after Jackson encourages him to embrace a more aggressive approach.

That made Chet look like a potential replacement for the more violent side of Rip. But his story ends with his death in Season 1, opening the door for Azul to become the more enduring successor.

Rip and Beth are building a new life

The shift in the ranch hierarchy is also part of a larger change for Rip and Beth.

The Yellowstone finale sent the couple toward a life of their own after Rip spent years working under John Dutton. After their Montana home is destroyed by fire, they purchase the Edwards Ranch in Texas, setting up the story of Dutton Ranch.

Now, Beth’s financial expertise and Rip’s ranching experience put them in charge. Rip is no longer the cowboy waiting for John’s instructions. He has become the ranch owner making the decisions.

That transformation naturally creates room for another character to step into his former position.

Azul is the lasting heir to Rip’s ranch role

Azul may not have Rip’s brutality, but that could ultimately be what makes his role more interesting.

He represents the loyal ranch cowboy at the center of the operation, while Rip now occupies the authority John Dutton once held.

Chet briefly showed what a more violent version of Rip’s role might look like, but his death makes Azul the clearer long-term successor.

In that sense, Dutton Ranch has not abandoned the ranch culture that defined Yellowstone. Instead, it has reshaped the hierarchy, with Rip moving up and Azul stepping into the role he left behind.
