Why Max Verstappen stayed: The Red Bull decision that ends months of speculation
Max Verstappen has signed a new Red Bull contract extending his stay until 2030. This decision ends months of speculation about his Formula 1 future. Verstappen cited his strong relationship with the team as a key factor. He expressed trust in ...

The decision is significant because Verstappen was not simply extending an expiring contract.
His previous deal already ran until the end of 2028, but uncertainty surrounding performance-related exit clauses had kept the door open to a possible move.
That possibility has now been shut, with the Dutch driver committing his long-term future to the team that has shaped virtually his entire F1 career.
A difficult season did not change his mind
The timing of the announcement makes Verstappen's decision particularly striking.Red Bull has endured a challenging 2026 campaign and Verstappen, one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history, is still searching for his first Grand Prix victory of the season.
It is a sharp contrast to the years of dominance that brought him four consecutive world championships.
Yet Verstappen has chosen to stay rather than wait for a potentially more competitive opportunity elsewhere.
Ahead of his home Dutch Grand Prix, the 28-year-old said his relationship with Red Bull went far beyond a standard driver-team partnership. He described the team as a “second family” and said continuing with the people who have been part of his entire F1 journey was something he had always wanted.
For Verstappen, the decision appears to be rooted as much in trust and familiarity as in the prospect of immediate success.
Months of McLaren and Mercedes speculation
Verstappen's future had become one of Formula 1's biggest talking points. The Dutchman had been linked with potential moves to rival teams, including McLaren and Mercedes, while reports suggested his representatives had explored options outside Red Bull. A change of scenery appeared increasingly plausible as Red Bull struggled to reproduce its previous dominance.
McLaren, however, indicated that it intended to continue with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, while Verstappen's new contract has now removed one of the biggest names from the driver market altogether.
The announcement could have wider consequences across Formula 1, with rival teams now having greater clarity about their own driver plans for the coming seasons.
Red Bull has changed around him
Verstappen's commitment also comes after a period of major change within Red Bull. The team has seen several prominent figures depart in recent years, including longtime team boss Christian Horner and renowned car designer Adrian Newey. Those changes, combined with the team's on-track struggles, had only added to questions about whether Verstappen would want to remain.
But Verstappen signalled confidence in the direction of the team under Laurent Mekies, praising the work done since the leadership change and pointing to what he sees as a clearer vision for the future.
That faith may prove crucial as Red Bull attempts to rebuild its challenge under Formula 1's new era of regulations.
From teenage debut to a deal until 2030
Verstappen's bond with Red Bull stretches back well before his championship-winning years. He entered Formula 1 as a teenager in 2015 through Red Bull's second team, then known as Toro Rosso, becoming the youngest driver in the sport's history. He later moved to the senior Red Bull team and went on to become one of the defining drivers of his generation, collecting four world titles and 71 race victories.
Now, with his contract running until the end of 2030, Verstappen has chosen continuity over the uncertainty of a blockbuster move.
The deal does not guarantee that Red Bull's current problems will disappear overnight. Verstappen still faces the challenge of returning to the front of the grid, and the team's recovery will remain under intense scrutiny.
But after months of questions about where he might go next — and even whether he would remain in Formula 1 for the long term — Verstappen has delivered his answer.
For now, the driver who became synonymous with Red Bull is staying exactly where he is.
