The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has announced a recall of tomatoes from two different brands across 14 states due to possible salmonella contamination. While no illnesses have been reported so far, the agency urges consumers to dispose of the affected products or return unopened packages.

Affected Brands and States

One of the recalled products is the four-count Vine Ripe tomatoes packed by Ray & Mascari Inc. These were sold at Gordon Food Service Stores in 11 states:
New York, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

The recall was initiated after Hanshaw & Caping Farms in Immokalee, Florida, notified Ray & Mascari of potential salmonella contamination linked to a specific lot of repacked tomatoes.

The affected tomatoes are packaged in plastic clamshells with a "VINE RIPE TOMATOES" label and the marking “Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc.”

Separately, Williams Farms Repack LLC has also issued a recall for tomatoes distributed between April 23–28, 2025, to wholesalers in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. Details are available on the FDA website.

Health Risks: What Is Salmonella?

Salmonella infection symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps

The infection can be severe or even fatal for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

A Pattern of Recalls

This recall follows a string of recent food safety concerns. Last year, an E. coli outbreak linked to uncooked slivered onions in McDonald’s Quarter Pounders sickened at least 75 people across 13 states.

In another high-alert case, the FDA issued a Class I recall (the most serious) for eggs sold at Costco due to potential salmonella contamination in December.
