A 15-year-old student opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, killing a teacher and a student while injuring six others. The shooter, identified as Natalie Rupnow, who also went by the name Samantha, died later on the way to the hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot, according to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes.

Who Was Natalie Rupnow?

Natalie Rupnow, a 15-year-old student at Abundant Life Christian School, was known to her peers and teachers as Samantha. Authorities have not yet provided details regarding her background or motives. Investigators are looking into her family’s connection to the firearm used and examining any personal items she may have left behind for further insight.

Rupnow’s father is cooperating with police. Barnes said, “He (Rupnow’s father) lost someone as well. And so we're not going to rush the information, we'll take our time and certainly do our due diligence.”

The shooting occurred inside a classroom during a study hall session that included students from multiple grades. Barnes confirmed, “The shooting happened inside a classroom in a study hall of students from mixed grades.” Rupnow had been present at the school from the beginning of the day before carrying out the attack.

Authorities revealed that a second-grade student called 911 to report the shooting. Police are investigating whether the gun used belonged to Rupnow’s family, who are cooperating with the investigation.
