James Holder, co-founder of British fashion label Superdry, has been sentenced to eight years in prison by a UK court after being convicted of rape.

The 54-year-old entrepreneur was found guilty by a jury at Gloucester Crown Court over an incident that took place in May 2022. However, he was cleared of a separate allegation of assault by penetration.

According to the prosecution, the woman involved told the court that Holder entered her taxi and later went into her home without invitation after the two had spent time at a bar in Cheltenham, England. She alleged that Holder sexually assaulted her after waking up from a brief nap and ignored her repeated requests to stop.

Holder, who is married and has two children, denied the accusations throughout the trial and maintained that the encounter was consensual.

During sentencing at Bristol Crown Court, Judge David Chidgey described the crime as “a despicable act of sexual violence,” stating that the case reflected “a sense of entitlement” and a disregard for the victim’s right to make decisions about her own body.

Holder appeared at the hearing via video link from prison and showed little reaction as the sentence was announced.
