Inderjeet Gosal, a 35-year-old Brampton resident, was arrested by Canadian police in connection with a violent attack at a Hindu temple in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The attack took place on November 3, 2024, at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, where a protest turned into a physical assault on Hindu-Canadian devotees.

Gosal’s role in the attack

Gosal, a coordinator for the banned group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), Toronto Star reported. He is the key figure behind the Khalistan referendum in Canada. He was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon but was later released under conditions. Gosal is expected to appear in court in Brampton at a later date.

The protest turns violent

The incident started as a protest, with demonstrators waving Khalistani flags and banners, but it quickly escalated into violence. The protestors clashed with people and disrupted a consular event held by the temple and the Indian Consulate.

Canadian and Indian reactions

The attack was condemned by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who emphasised that every Canadian should be able to practise their faith safely. India also condemned the violence and called for the prosecution of those responsible. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Indian nationals in Canada.

Tensions between Canada and India

This incident comes amid strained relations between Canada and India. Last year, Prime Minister Trudeau accused India of being potentially involved in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has rejected these accusations and has criticised Canada for allowing pro-Khalistan elements to operate freely on Canadian soil.

Investigation ongoing

A special investigation team (SIT) has been set up to look into the criminal activity surrounding the November 3 and 4 incidents, and further legal action is expected.
