Delcy Rodríguez
After Venezuela’s Supreme Court directed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to step in as acting president following the detention of Nicolás Maduro during a US operation earlier in the day, focus has shifted to the woman now at the centre of the crisis. So, who is Delcy Rodríguez?

As per a New York Times (NYT) report, Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela’s newly appointed interim leader, assumes the role with a political background deeply rooted in leftist ideology and years of experience at the highest levels of power. A trusted ally of Nicolás Maduro, Rodríguez has long been one of the most influential figures within the ruling establishment.

Rodríguez's Political Legacy

Rodríguez, 56, is the daughter of Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, a Marxist guerrilla leader who gained international attention for orchestrating the kidnapping of American businessperson William Niehous in the 1970s. Niehous was held captive for three years before being rescued in 1979.

Her father was arrested and charged for his role in the kidnapping and later died during interrogation by intelligence agents at the age of 34. Politics and left-wing activism, the NYT notes, run deep in the Rodríguez family.

Delcy Rodríguez Education and Legal Background

Delcy Rodríguez was partly educated in France, where she specialised in labour law. This international exposure helped shape her image as a cosmopolitan and articulate leader, setting her apart in a largely militaristic and male-dominated Venezuelan government.

Rodríguez's Rise Under Nicolás Maduro

Rodríguez rose to prominence after Nicolás Maduro became president in 2013, following the death of Hugo Chávez, the founder of Venezuela’s Bolivarian political movement.

Maduro first appointed her as communications minister, later promoting her to foreign affairs minister, making her the first woman to hold the post in Venezuela. She became a familiar face across Latin America, often clashing openly with conservative leaders during diplomatic visits.

From Vice President to Economic Power Broker

In 2018, Rodríguez was appointed vice president and also took charge of SEBIN, Venezuela’s intelligence agency. Two years later, she assumed additional responsibilities as economy minister, where she surprised many by extending an olive branch to business elites and foreign investors.

According to the NYT, she spearheaded a market-friendly overhaul after Venezuela’s economy collapsed between 2013 and 2021. Her policies included limited privatisation of state assets and relatively conservative fiscal measures, helping stabilise the economy to some extent.

Navigating Sanctions and Oil Blockades

Rodríguez’s economic strategy left Venezuela somewhat better prepared to withstand sanctions and oil tanker blockades imposed during the Trump administration. Oil remains Venezuela’s economic lifeline, and her reforms provided a fragile but crucial buffer, the report said.

Contradictions on Display Amid Leadership Claims

The contradictions surrounding Rodríguez were evident when she addressed the nation on state television. While US President Donald Trump claimed that Rodríguez had been sworn in as Venezuela’s new president, state broadcasters repeatedly identified her as vice president.

Rodríguez herself insisted that Maduro remained Venezuela’s “only president”, reinforcing the ruling party’s stance despite international claims to the contrary.

Sanctions and Allegations of Rights Abuses

Despite her technocratic image, Rodríguez has been sanctioned by the United States, Canada and the European Union for her role in backing and overseeing crackdowns on dissent in Venezuela.

The NYT report notes that these sanctions reflect the dual nature of her leadership, a blend of pragmatic economic outreach and hardline political control.

A Family Deeply Embedded in Power

Rodríguez’s influence is further strengthened by her brother, Jorge Rodríguez, a key member of Maduro’s inner circle. He currently serves as president of Venezuela’s National Assembly and has been one of Maduro’s chief political strategists.
