Who is Brad Lightcap? OpenAI veteran who helped turn ChatGPT into an AI giant quits; read his full resignation letter

Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI’s longest-serving senior executives and a key figure behind the company’s rapid expansion into the enterprise market, has announced his departure from the artificial intelligence company.

Lightcap, who joined OpenAI in 2018, said on Tuesday, August 11, that he is leaving the company to “start something new.” His exit marks another high-profile departure from OpenAI as the ChatGPT maker continues to expand its business and AI operations.

Who is Brad Lightcap?

Lightcap has been part of OpenAI’s leadership team since the company was still primarily known as an AI research organisation. He worked closely with CEO Sam Altman, with the two having previously crossed paths at technology accelerator Y Combinator.


He served as OpenAI’s chief operating officer for four years, overseeing a period in which the company transformed from a research-focused lab into one of the world’s most prominent AI companies.

Lightcap played a major role in building OpenAI’s commercial operations. According to CNBC, over an 18-month period, he expanded the company’s commercial team from around 50 employees to more than 700.

The team covered areas including enterprise sales, developer relations, customer success and strategic corporate partnerships.

How Brad Lightcap helped build OpenAI’s enterprise business

The expansion of OpenAI’s commercial operations became increasingly important following the launch of GPT-4 and ChatGPT Enterprise.

As businesses began adopting generative AI tools, OpenAI moved to turn ChatGPT’s consumer popularity into a larger enterprise business, competing for corporate customers with AI rivals including Anthropic.

Lightcap was closely involved in that commercial push and helped establish the teams and operations needed to support OpenAI’s growing customer base.

In April, he moved out of the COO role and took on a position focused on special strategic projects. Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser assumed most of his previous operational responsibilities.

Why is Brad Lightcap leaving OpenAI?

Lightcap did not provide a specific reason for his departure. In a message to OpenAI employees, he said he was leaving to “start something new” and indicated that he would share more about his next step in the future.

He also made clear that his departure was not a break from OpenAI’s mission.

“I believe in OpenAI more than ever and am excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point,” Lightcap wrote in his message to employees.

Lightcap said he would remain around for the next few weeks and would continue supporting the company from outside.

In his message, Lightcap reflected on his eight years at OpenAI, its transformation from a small research lab into a major technology company, and the teams he helped build.

He recalled joining the company in 2018 after being introduced to Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever and said he had been drawn to the challenge of working on artificial general intelligence.

Lightcap also highlighted the growth of OpenAI’s operations and business teams, including finance, legal, people operations, corporate security, go-to-market, government relations and partnerships.

He described watching those teams mature under new leaders as one of the most rewarding parts of his time at the company.

Reflecting on OpenAI’s transformation, Lightcap wrote that the company had grown “from a small research lab to one of the most consequential companies of our time.”

He ended his message by thanking employees and referencing an old OpenAI joke: “the real AGI is the friends you made along the way.”

Lightcap said he would remain “a phone call away” for employees who needed him.

"Team, it is bittersweet to share that I’ll be moving on from OpenAI to start something new. I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent most of the last decade pursuing our mission and building this company. Sitting here today, mission success feels within sight. It has been the honor of my life to help bring us to this point, and to do it alongside all of you.

I joined OpenAI in 2018, eight years ago this month, because I wanted to work on something hard. @sama introduced me to @gdb and @ilyasut, who showed me a pitch deck suggesting that because models improve predictably with scale, AGI was not only possible but likely. If you had told me then that we’d be where we are today, I wouldn't have believed you.

In the years that followed, I had the privilege of building the first versions of most of our operations and business teams – from Finance to Legal, People, CorpSec, GTM/Gov, Partnerships, and more. Among the most rewarding parts of this journey for me has been watching each of these teams mature under brilliant leaders. I am excited for the next decade in the hands of this incredibly capable team.

At the same time, we grew from a small research lab to one of the most consequential companies of our time. I was reminded of that fact constantly – from serving our first user to our billionth, to the growing scale and ambition of our partnerships and the occasional curveball (the Blip, etc.).

Through it all, I’m proud of how we’ve maintained our focus on people. It always amazes me how quickly the world has adopted our tools and rallied behind our mission. I hope we will continue to earn their trust.

Over the last few months, I’ve been focused on the next horizon and what would stand in the way of mission success. I believe there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period. I’ll have more to share soon, but I believe in OpenAI more than ever and am excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point.

I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to work with all of you, and to so many of you for the support through the years. The old OpenAI meme that “the real AGI is the friends you made along the way” really rings true for me.
