Whine & Dine: Trump & Carney meet after Reagan ad back and forth

Minutes before Air Force One touched down in South Korea, US President Donald Trump issued a terse missive on social media: "For those that are asking, we didn't come to South Korea to see Canada!" Just over 12 hours later, Trump was seated directly across a small dinner table from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump has been furious with Canada since the province of Ontario began airing an ad using a Ronald Reagan radio address to criticise his tariff regime. Trump then announced his intention to slap anotger 10% tariff on Canada \n goods as he traveled to Asia. Since arriving, he's made his annoyance with his neighbor to the North - and its leader - plain for all to see.

"I don't want to meet with him," Trump said on Monday. "No, I'm not going to be meeting with them for a while. I'm very happy with the deal we have right now with Canada. We're going to let it ride."

Despite Trump's anger, Carney still retained an invite to a dinner held in the US president's honour Wednesday night on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju. The event was hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who has spent most of the day courting Trump.


Trump and Carney were seated across an eight-person table from one another, joined by Lee and the leaders of Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore.
