For more than a century, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stood as one of the most recognizable landmarks on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. But by the late 20th century, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States was facing a problem that no amount of masonry could solve: the ocean was getting dangerously close.

Built in 1870, the 198.49-foot lighthouse had originally stood roughly 1,500 feet from the Atlantic. Decades of shoreline erosion had dramatically narrowed that distance. By the late 1990s, the sea was within about 60 feet of the tower, raising the prospect that one of America's most important historic lighthouses could eventually be lost to the shifting coastline.

The solution was extraordinary. Rather than dismantle the 4,830-ton structure brick by brick, engineers decided to move the entire lighthouse.


Moving a 4,830-ton lighthouse without taking it apart

The engineering challenge was enormous. The lighthouse had to be separated from its existing foundation without damaging the historic brick structure and then moved across the ground while keeping the tower stable.

On June 17, 1999, the tower began its journey. Over the next 23 days, it was carefully transported about 2,900 feet inland to a newly prepared foundation.

Engineers placed the lighthouse on a massive grid of seven 70-foot steel beams fitted with 100 hydraulic jacks. The hydraulic system lifted the tower approximately 5.34 feet, creating enough space for steel roll beams to be positioned underneath it.

Horizontal hydraulic jacks then pushed the lighthouse forward in carefully controlled stages. The tower advanced roughly 100 feet a day, with engineers continuously monitoring the structure throughout the process.

It was less like transporting a building and more like moving a gigantic, extremely fragile piece of machinery. On July 9, the lighthouse was finally placed onto its new foundation, completing one of the most remarkable historic-preservation projects ever undertaken in the United States.

The $11.8 million project ultimately succeeded without dismantling the lighthouse. After traveling 2,900 feet inland, the tower was lowered onto its new foundation and restored to approximately the same distance from the ocean that had separated it from the shoreline when it was constructed in 1870.

The lighthouse itself has an unusual history

The structure that was moved in 1999 was actually the second major lighthouse built at Cape Hatteras. The first was authorized in 1794 and completed in 1803. That sandstone tower stood only 90 feet high and was initially illuminated with whale oil. It was eventually considered inadequate because it was too short and its unpainted sandstone exterior blended into the surrounding landscape.

In 1853, the original tower was extended to 150 feet, painted red and white and equipped with a Fresnel lens. But by the 1860s, the structure required extensive repairs, prompting Congress to fund an entirely new lighthouse.

Construction of the present tower began in October 1868. Because groundwater was a problem at the site, builders used a foundation system incorporating yellow pine timbers. The new lighthouse was illuminated for the first time on December 16, 1870.

The old lighthouse was demolished just a few months later.

In 1873, the distinctive black-and-white spiral stripes were added. The pattern was not merely decorative. It served as a daymark, allowing mariners to distinguish Cape Hatteras from other lighthouses along the coast.

It stands in the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”

Cape Hatteras is not an arbitrary location for a lighthouse. The waters surrounding the Outer Banks have long been notorious for shipwrecks. The Gulf Stream meets the colder Labrador Current in the region, contributing to complicated ocean conditions around the Diamond Shoals. Shifting sandbars, powerful currents, storms and heavy maritime traffic made the area particularly dangerous.

The waters became known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” with hundreds—and potentially thousands—of ships lost along the broader North Carolina coast over the centuries. The lighthouse was therefore designed not simply as a landmark but as a warning and navigational aid for ships approaching one of the most treacherous stretches of the American Atlantic coast.

The move solved one problem

After its relocation, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse once again stood approximately 1,500 feet from the water. Engineers estimated that the new location should protect it from serious shoreline erosion for roughly a century.

The irony is that the same forces that threatened the lighthouse continue to reshape the Outer Banks.

Since 2020, at least 32 private beach houses have collapsed into Cape Hatteras National Seashore as erosion has continued to eat away at portions of the coastline.

And the lighthouse itself still requires constant preservation.

In 2024, scaffolding was erected around the tower as part of an extensive restoration project originally expected to cost $19.2 million and last about 18 months. The work uncovered 116 cracks in the cast-iron brackets supporting the gallery deck, considerably more than the 30 to 40 cracks initially expected.

The newly discovered damage was believed to have existed before the 1999 relocation. Thermal expansion and water damage are among the potential causes being investigated. The additional work has increased both the projected cost and duration of the restoration.
