Princess Elizabeth received a breathtaking wedding gift worth an astounding $88 million in the form of a necklace and tiara from the affluent Nizam of Hyderabad. The year was 1947. It wasn't until five years later that she ascended to the throne to become the Queen of England, reports The Mirror.

The Princess Elizabeth received the stunning gift from one the world's wealthiest men when she married Philip Mountbatten, who later became Prince Phillip which is now worth over £66 million. The late Queen Elizabeth II was known for an keen eye for jewellery and curated an extensive enough to be shared among Royal Family members, securely housed within the Royal Collection.

Queen Elizabeth's incredible wedding gift from one of world's richest men

Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away at Balmoral in September 2022, had an exceptional eye for jewellery, amassing over time remarkable pieces to which the entire Royal Family has access. These cherished items, numbering in the hundreds are securely stored, away from prying eyes, as per reports.

The Queen received the jaw-dropping gift from the Nizam of Hyderabad, who was one of the world's richest men back in 1937 and was known for his miserliness. Back when she received this lavish gift, little could she have guessed her future as a monarch would span seven decades.

The Nizams were given the title of "Faithful Ally of the British Government" for their roles in the Second and Third Anglo-Mysore Wars and the Indian Rebellion of 1857. He allowed her to personally create a bespoke piece that would last a lifetime.

It is believed that she sat down with Cartier to design it after they were given strict instructions to let her creativity run wild. She selected each intricate detail to ensure they were to her liking.

Queen wore the jewellery at high-society events

Known for her love of brooches, Queen Elizabeth often wore the tiara at high-society events, exuding royal elegance. The stunning piece was absolutely breath-taking, and the Queen wore the tiara to white tie-events over the years which set her above the rest.

The Queen repurposed the tiara in her twilight years, fashioning it into three separate brooches for more frequent use of its central gemstones, as per the Express.

Daena Borrowman, Marketing Manager at Jewellerybox, revealed: "The magnificent Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace, considered to be the most expensive piece of royal jewellery in the world, is worth more than £66million. It was a wedding gift to Princess Elizabeth from the Nizam of Hyderabad, one of the richest people in the world," reports the Mirror.

She added, "The Nizam is said to have generously instructed Cartier to let the bride-to-be pick anything she wished from their collections, to which the young princess chose a tiara with three detachable flower brooches and what we now know as the Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace."

The jewellery was passed on to Queen Camilla

The Queen adored this piece as it allowed her to add a touch of her style to the remarkable item. In recent years, she lent the tiara to the Princess of Wales on her wedding day, who has continued to wear it to other public events.

Meanwhile, the necklace was passed down to Queen Camilla following the late monarch's death, and she has worn it many times since. The five-strand necklace is around 250 to 300 carats, with the main stone in the necklace being five carats alone making it worth $10.3 million.
