With Donald Trump set to be sworn in as the new US president, all eyes are on Melania Trump's role in the White House. But what is exactly the rold of the first lady in America?

According to Georgewbushlibrary, the role of First Lady has changed significantly throughout US history, transitioning from a primarily domestic and ceremonial position to one with greater public influence and advocacy. The US Constitution doesn't define the First Lady's role, leaving each spouse to shape it.

The term "First Lady" itself has a complex history. Early presidential wives were often called "Lady," followed by their last names, a practice borrowed from British aristocracy. Dolley Madison, wife of James Madison, solidified the role by hosting White House events even before her husband's presidency. Her ability to navigate social and political circles established her as a prominent figure. Zachary Taylor later eulogized her as the "first lady of our land" in 1848.

The term "First Lady" first appeared in print in Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, referring to Harriet Lane, President James Buchanan's niece, who served as hostess in the absence of a presidential spouse. Other terms like "Presidentress" and "Mrs. President" were also considered. Jackie Kennedy later remarked that "First Lady" sounded like "the name of a prized race horse."

Over time, First Ladies have used their platform to champion various causes. Harriet Lane advocated for Native Americans, Mary Todd Lincoln supported freed slaves, and Helen Taft promoted workplace safety. Modern First Ladies have continued this tradition, with Laura Bush focusing on education and libraries and Michelle Obama addressing childhood obesity.

The increasing responsibilities of First Ladies led to the development of a dedicated staff. Edith Roosevelt was the first to have a federally-hired social secretary, and subsequent First Ladies expanded their teams to include press secretaries, speech writers, and chiefs of staff.

Public fascination with First Ladies extends to their fashion and style choices. Frances Folsom Cleveland, Mamie Eisenhower, Jackie Kennedy, and Nancy Reagan are examples of First Ladies whose fashion influenced trends.
