A dramatic video capturing the crash of a Russian Ka-226 helicopter in Dagestan has gone viral on social media. The incident occurred on November 7 near the village of Achi-Su in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan, along the Caspian Sea, and claimed five lives — including four employees of the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant (KEMZ).

The footage shows the pilot attempting to gain control of the damaged aircraft after its tail was visibly broken. At one point, the pilot manages to lift the helicopter over shallow waters, then descends before pulling up again and flying over the sea despite the severe damage.

Miraculously, the helicopter remains airborne for a brief period, but it’s evident that the pilot is struggling to control it. Moments later, the aircraft is seen veering toward land in an apparent effort to make an emergency landing. Before reaching a safe spot, the helicopter begins to spin uncontrollably and crashes to the ground.

Fourt employees of KEMZ, a Russian defense manufacturer that produces aviation systems and equipment, reportedly died in the accident including the deputy general director for construction and transport support. The helicopter’s flight mechanic also lost his life, while two others sustained injuries.

KEMZ is currently under U.S. sanctions for its role in supporting Russia’s war effort in Ukraine. The company supplies diagnostic and control systems for Sukhoi and MiG fighter jets, which have been used in airstrikes against Ukrainian targets.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, has labeled the incident a “disaster” and launched an official inquiry.

As per a report in The Kyiv Independent, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency had earlier claim sabotaging Ka-226 helicopters during a mission. Ongoing Western sanctions have also left Russia’s aviation industry struggling with a shortage of essential spare parts for maintenance.
