A shocking mass shooting unfolded on Monday at a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper housing the NFL headquarters and offices of major financial firms like Blackstone and KPMG. At least four people were killed, including an off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, before the gunman was found dead inside the building.

According to a law enforcement source, the suspect (Shane Tamura) opened fire inside 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise building in central New York. One of the victims was an NYPD officer who was working a paid security job at the time. The three other victims were civilians. Several others were injured in the incident, which sent panic across the bustling business district.

Authorities said the shooter later died by suicide. His body was found inside the same building, reportedly on the 32nd floor where he had briefly barricaded himself during the chaos.

NYC Mass Shooting

A man exited a double parked BMW with an M4 rifle and then walked toward the building on Monday evening, according to surveillance video.

He quickly opened fire on the NYPD officer as he entered the building before shooting a woman who tried to take cover, police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference on Monday night. He then started “spraying” the lobby with gunfire.

The man went to the elevator bank and shot a security guard who was taking cover behind a security desk and also another man in the lobby, Tisch said.

The man took the elevator to the 33rd floor to a real estate management company and one person was shot and killed on that floor. The man then walked down a hallway and shot himself, she said.

Who Was Shane Tamura?

The suspect has been identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old originally from Hawaii who had been living in Las Vegas. In his teenage years, Tamura had made headlines as a talented high school football player in California. A video from 2015, now circulating on social media, shows Tamura discussing his love for football, making his attack on the NFL's headquarters appear chillingly symbolic.

“We were down 10–0... our coach kept telling us, don’t hold your heads down... we just had to stay disciplined and come together as a team.”

He also vividly recalled his late-game touchdown on a jailbreak screen play: “Ernie threw the pass to me… one thing led to another, and I scored.”

Tamura legally owned firearms and had a concealed carry permit in Nevada. While he had no major criminal record, he was once licensed as a private investigator. However, reports suggest that he may have been struggling with untreated mental health issues.

A Possible Motive?

So far, police have not confirmed a motive, but many online are speculating that Tamura’s failure to pursue a professional football career may have played a role. The fact that he targeted a building linked to the NFL has only added weight to this theory.

Investigators are now going through his phone, computer, and background for any signs of warning or triggers. Some sources close to the case say Tamura might have been experiencing psychological distress or delusions in the days leading up to the shooting.

The Scene and Aftermath

Eyewitnesses described the area as chaotic, with police swarming the scene and people screaming. Russ McGee, a 31-year-old sports bettor who was at a nearby gym, told Reuters, “I just saw a lot of commotion and cops and people screaming.”

A large police and FBI presence locked down the area. New York Mayor Eric Adams confirmed there were “multiple injuries” and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch later said the shooter had been "neutralised".

Media outlets have published an image of the suspect entering the building with what appeared to be an AR-style rifle while wearing a bulletproof vest.

The FBI has joined the NYPD in the ongoing investigation as the city comes to terms with yet another tragic shooting in a high-security zone.
