A company in Japan is offering a “one-day student” scheme for foreign tourists, allowing them to immerse themselves in local school culture for just 30,000 yen, that is around Rs 17000.

As Japanese manga and anime culture grows in global popularity, the country's school culture—renowned for its distinctive sailor uniforms, dynamic club activities, and strong sense of camaraderie—has captured the imagination of fans worldwide.

Recently, a company in Japan, Undokaiya, launched a programme called “Your High School”, where foreign visitors can experience a day as a Japanese secondary student, conducted entirely in English, according to the Japanese media outlet Mainichi News.

The company seeks to offer international tourists a unique opportunity to experience Japanese school culture while boosting local tourism.

For 30,000 yen, visitors of all ages can become a "one-day student," with up to 30 participants allowed each day. Tourists can choose to wear either the traditional Japanese sailor uniform or a suit for the opening ceremony. They are then assigned to various classrooms and participate in activities like practicing calligraphy in a Japanese language class.

The teachers here have fascinating stories. According to the official website, homeroom teacher Hideo Onishima, once a troubled youth, chose to become a teacher after meeting a mentor who helped him turn his life around.

Another teacher, Rukia Kikuchi, dreams of becoming a respected educator and often motivates her students with inspirational quotes from Japanese anime.

In between classes, the school conducts disaster drills, teaching visitors crucial emergency response skills, such as quickly ducking under their desks.

After lunch, visitors attend history and physical education classes. They can wear striped sports uniforms and participate in games like tug of war in the gym.

During PE class, "rebellious students" with dyed hair and baseball bats may disrupt activities, causing playful chaos and intimidating their classmates. These mischievous students represent Japan's Yanki culture, a subculture known for defying school rules and social norms, which adds a distinctive flair to the Japanese school experience.

At the end of the day, visitors receive a graduation certificate.
