Walmart mangoes recalled over Salmonella risk: Check affected states, what to do and more

Hundreds of mangoes sold at Walmart stores across four Northeastern states have been recalled over concerns that they may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to federal health officials.

Importer Panorama Produce issued the recall on August 28 after determining that 302 boxes of size 9 mangoes could be contaminated with the bacteria, according to a notice posted on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.

Salmonella infection can cause diarrhoea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Symptoms typically develop six hours to six days after exposure. The FDA said no illnesses linked to the recalled mangoes have been reported.

When were the recalled mangoes sold?

The mangoes were sold between August 10 and August 21 at Walmart stores in:

• Connecticut
• New York
• New Jersey
• Pennsylvania

The recalled mangoes were packaged in Martina-branded cases. Individual fruits can be identified by a light blue sticker bearing the Agrofepac label, "Produce of Mexico", PLU number 4584 and UPC number 07503061948050.

What should consumers do with the recalled mangoes?

The FDA has advised consumers who purchased the recalled mangoes not to eat them. They should either throw the fruit away or return it to the store where it was purchased.
