A recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in the US has been linked to a new Omicron subvariant XFG known colloquially as “Stratus.” The new enters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data reveals “Stratus” has become the predominant variant in the United States. The World Health Organization (WHO) then classified it as a “variant under monitoring.”

What is XFG variant
XFG is a recombinant or hybrid of two existing omicron strains, LF.7 and LP.8.1.2, per the WHO. This means XFG has a mixture of genetic material from these two variants, which may make it better able to bind to cells in the body and cause infection, Dr. Albert Ko, professor of public health said.

First detected in January in Southeast Asia, the XFG variant caused surges in India this spring. The XFG variant cases in US were first reported in March in US but then it surpassed the NB.1.8.1 or “Nimbus" variant. Nimbus is known for its “razor blade throat”.
