The issue began shortly after 12:41 a.m. ET, leaving countless Verizon users unable to make calls or access the internet for several hours. Reports of the failure spread quickly online as people woke up to find their devices showing 'Emergency Calls Only'.
Verizon is one of the biggest mobile and broadband providers in the U.S., providing just over 146.1 million wireless retail connections, along with 10.4 million broadband connections, as of the end of June 2025.

Verizon outage affects many in US
According to DownDetector, the outage lasted into the early morning before service gradually returned. Verizon confirmed the disruption and said its engineers were working to resolve it. While the company has not yet explained the cause, the outage marks the second major service interruption in just two months.
Several Verizon users took to social media to complain of no service, emergency calls only, and network disruptions. The outage seemingly affected both mobile voice/text services and data connectivity across various texts.

On X Spencer Hakimian, the founder of Tolou Capital Management, posted: “BREAKING: Massive Verizon blackouts across the United States.” Another U.S. X user wrote: “I used to love having @Verizon, I had service everywhere with no issues, but now lately their service keeps going out it's AWFUL.”
Responding to the Downdetector report, one commentator wrote: “Verizon is not being up front about what is happening. They owe ALL of us a credit on our upcoming bills. This is a huge problem for MILLIONS of us!” Another commented: “We need a class-action lawsuit. Verizon is not being upfront about the status. This outage will cause loss of life and property.”
Verizon has not confirmed the root cause of the outage, but possible explanations include a software or firmware glitch at the network core, DNS or routing failures, a cascading network infrastructure failure, maintenance or misconfiguration, or a cyberattack or security incident. However, there is no concrete evidence to support any specific cause at this time.

Verizon stated that it is “aware of issues impacting service” and that engineering teams are actively troubleshooting. Meanwhile, users are advised to check Verizon’s official network status page, reboot devices or toggle airplane mode, use Wi-Fi calling, and stay updated through local news and Verizon announcements.
Is Verizon service back in US?
As of 4 a.m. ET on Thursday, Verizon coverage was reportedly restored to near normal levels, according to data published by Downdetector. User complaints and status maps included LSI keywords such as network disruption, cell service outage, wireless carrier down, and cellular network blackout.On social media, users reported their phones stuck in “SOS mode” or “Emergency Calls Only”, being unable to send texts or make regular calls, experiencing dropped data connections or no mobile internet, and expressing frustration over delayed communication from Verizon.
