When Taylor Swift released the track list for “The Life of a Showgirl,” many Swifties wondered if track No. 6, “Ruin the Friendship,” was about Blake Lively. Some fans immediately clocked one song titled "Ruin the Friendship," speculating that it was about her rumored falling-out with her longtime confidant Blake Lively.

And after listening 'Ruin the Friendship', it’s safe to say it’s not. “Ruin the Friendship” talks about her high school self having a crush on a boy who already has a girlfriend. However, Taylor Swift in the song suggests her love is not reciprocated when she sings, “Your smile, miles wide / And it was not an invitation / Should’ve kissed you anyway.”

Swift, 35, also insinuates that, even if he had a crush on her, there would have been too many bumps along the road. “And it was not convenient, no / But your girlfriend was away / Should’ve kissed you anyway,” she sings, later adding, “Wilted corsage dangles from my wrist / Over his shoulder I catch a glimpse / And see … you looking at me / and it was not an invitation.”

The songwriter also mentions that she would not have wanted to “ruin the friendship” with the boy’s ex, because “lately we’ve been good.” “Staying friends is safe / Doesn’t mean you should …,” she reiterates, as if trying to convince herself.

Is Ruin the Friendship about Blake Lively?

Swift said she recorded Showgirl during the European leg of her Eras Tour, so likely between May and August of 2024. If the album was written and recorded during that time, "Ruin the Friendship" likely isn't about Lively, given that the It Ends With Us drama began in earnest in December of last year.

The rumors about “Ruin the Friendship” are finally put to rest. Rather than dwelling on a recent falling out, the mid-tempo track opens with Swift reflecting on a high school friend and the “what-ifs” of their past. She reminisces about cruising down Gallatin Road in Nashville, watching games from the boy’s Jeep, and even moments from her high school prom — 50 Cent reference included — all while confessing in the chorus, “And it was not an invitation / Should've kissed you anyway.”

Abigail, as true Swifties know, is Abigail Anderson Berard, Swift's close friend since high school. She's also heavily featured in Swift's song "Fifteen," off her 2008 album, Fearless. "Ruin the Friendship" doesn't state which of their high school friends has died, but Swift does use a lyrical callback toward the end of it, singing, "It was not an invitation / But I flew home anyway / With so much left to say." Capturing the pain of losing an old friend who was way too young, she continues, "It was not convenient, no / But I whispered at the grave / 'Should've kissed you anyway.'"

Swift saves one final gut punch for the song's conclusion, in which she reflects on the lesson she's learned and offers some words of wisdom: "My advice is always ruin the friendship / Better that than regret it / For all time."
