Russia Irkutsk plague: Are Americans in danger?
The US is keeping an eye on reports of a suspected case of pneumonic plague in Russia. According to Al Jazeera, the US State Department said said Washington was “monitoring the situation closely with the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and our other interagency partners”. “We encourage Russian authorities to share accurate information quickly and openly,” the State Department official said in the statement.The White House is also monitoring the plague outbreak in Russia. An official with the Trump administration told Axios on Sunday that the administration is 'aware, monitoring the outbreak, and assessing options.' The State Department urged Russian authorities to "share accurate information quickly and openly," while noting that plague is treatable with commonly available antibiotics, particularly when treatment begins early.

A US Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson also confirmed that the CDC was working with the State Department, and the White House is also monitoring developments and Russia's quarantine measures.

Russia plague: Will there be travel restrictions?

What is Pneumonic plague and how is it caused?
Pneumonic plague is one of three types of plague caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It is transferred as a result of breathing in airborne droplets from another person. According to Daily Mail, Pneumonic plague causes a severe lung infection, with symptoms including fever, shortness of breath and coughing up blood, which typically begin to show between three and seven days after contact.Deaths from pneumonic plague drop to around 17 percent if treated with antibiotics within the first 24 hours of infection. However, the disease is almost always fatal if left untreated. There have also been claims that Russian authorities are attempting to hide exactly what happened. Reports claim that drugs used to treat the disease are running out in the region, leaving terrified residents piling into pharmacies and medical facilities demanding supplies.
