The award-winning actress appeared on Broadway and had a wealth of TV and movie credits. The actress is best known for playing Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC sitcom, which ran between 1990 and 1995. She also won a Tony award for Broadway’s Darling of the Day in 1968.

Patricia Routledge also had a prolific career in the theatre. A statement to the PA news agency said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Dame Patricia Routledge, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love.“Even at 96 years old, Dame Patricia’s passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations of audiences have continued to find her through her beloved television roles. She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her devoted admirers around the world.” The cause of Patricia Routledge's death remains unclear.

The BBC’s director of comedy, Jon Petrie, said in a tribute that Dame Patricia was an actor of “remarkable range”, adding: “But her portrayal of Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances has to be one of the most iconic performances in British comedy.
“Whatever she did, she brought impeccable craft and in doing so inspired generations of writers, performers and audiences. “Dame Patricia made millions laugh and left a legacy that will always be remembered with gratitude and admiration.”

Who was Patricia Routledge?
Dame Patricia Routledge’s career spanned six remarkable decades, earning her an Olivier Award in 1988 for her performance as the Old Lady in Leonard Bernstein’s operetta Candide, and a Tony Award in 1968 for portraying Alice Challice in Darling Of The Day.Born on 17 February 1929 in Birkenhead, Merseyside, she grew up in a household where appearances mattered—her father ran a high-end gentlemen’s outfitter. She studied English at Liverpool University, taking part in student productions, and made her professional stage debut at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1952 as Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Two years later, she made her London debut, eventually becoming a familiar face on Broadway in musicals and plays such as How’s The World Treating You?.
Patricia’s talent extended to television, where she became widely recognized for her role as Kitty in Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV during the mid-1980s, before achieving iconic status as Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC’s Keeping Up Appearances. In 2017, her contributions to theatre and charity were formally recognized when she was appointed Dame Commander of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace.

Throughout her life, she remained proud of her northern roots, once remarking, “You are never done with your roots. I think the people who try to make out that they are, are in deep trouble.”
Patricia also captivated audiences in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, playing a woman who decides life begins at 60 and becomes a private detective. She first embodied Hetty on BBC Radio 4, reading Missing Persons by David Cook for Book at Bedtime, with the television series co-written by Cook and John Bowen. Reflecting on the character, she said: “Hetty is a little lady from a terraced house in the North West. She is the kind of woman who is in my blood. I know hundreds of little women like her. They used to be called working class, but we’re not supposed to say that any more.”
