Katy Perry receives massive blow after facing backlash for her Blue Origin Space mission

Pop star Katy Perry has announced the cancellation of two upcoming shows just days after facing backlash for her Blue Origin mission. The 40-year-old singer said she will no longer perform in Guadalajara, Mexico because the venue is unfinished and won't be ready in time for her scheduled dates on May 1 and May 2, according to The Mirror.

The pop icon, 40, wrote: 'Sadly, I learned that the construction of Arena Guadalajara will not be complete for their scheduled shows next week, which includes mine on May 1 and 2. '

'Last week I sent my team to the Arena to make sure there wasn't anything we could do to make this happen but it was evident when they arrived that the venue was not ready or safe to receive my show or an audience.

'I wish I could fix this but it is beyond my control. You guys mean the world to me and we have all been on such a beautiful journey together that I will be thinking about how I can create something special for the fans in Guadalajara in the future.

Why is Katy Perry facing backlash?

Katy Perry's trip to space on an all-female Blue Origin mission quickly turned into a difficult situation for the star. Katy Perry's space mission has been overshadowed by public criticism and cancellation of her upcoming concert.

Katy joined Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez, as well as NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and activist Amanda Nguyen, on the all-female Blue Origin fleet that headed to space last week.

Despite their seemingly harmless intentions, the optics of the mission have since been described as 'tone deaf' and 'embarrassing'.

Katy Perry’s journey to space was intended to be both empowering and historic, especially as she was part of a mission celebrating female achievement. She reportedly found the experience deeply emotional.

However, the public reaction was mixed. On social media and among some experts, her return drew criticism—particularly a moment when she stepped out of the space capsule, held up a daisy, and kissed the ground.

While personally meaningful, many viewed the gesture as overly theatrical, especially in light of more pressing space-related developments, such as NASA astronauts being stranded in orbit for nine months. Environmental advocates also raised concerns about the ecological impact of the launch. Some online commentators questioned whether the symbolic significance of such missions justifies their environmental cost.

The research revealed the Blue Origin rocket launch released greenhouse gases, which "altered the stratosphere". Despite the aerospace company's claim the "only byproduct of New Shepard's engine combustion is water vapour with no carbon emissions" during flight, University College London's Atmospheric Chemistry and Air Quality professor Eloise Marais said water vapour is a greenhouse gas that depletes the "ozone layer, and also forms clouds that affect climate".

The research coincided with Perry's resurfaced UNICEF weather report in 2015 on the effects of climate change "hurting children around the world."

According to a source cited by the Daily Mail, the backlash from her space mission was also upsetting for other women involved in the flight. The insider claimed that while Katy didn’t regret going to space, she did regret the media attention that turned the mission into what many saw as a spectacle.
