Powell's appearance is expected to provide insight into whether the Fed will slacken its monetary policy and cut interest rates, which have been held between 4.25% and 4.5% since December.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will deliver a high-profile speech Friday at an annual gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as the central bank weighs its first interest rate cut of 2025. The Trump administration is ramping up its pressure on the Fed Reserve with President, at many times, hurling insults on Powell regarding cuts.

It’s likely Powell’s last time addressing the crowd of world bankers at the storied event, with his term as Fed chair concluding in May. Trump has vowed to replace Powell, with a number of candidates already under consideration.

The conference comes amid Trump administration’s drive for a sweeping shake-up at the Federal Reserve—targeting both its policies and its leadership. One governor has already stepped down this month, another faces allegations of mortgage fraud, and Chair Jerome Powell is under fire for resisting calls to cut rates and for overseeing an expensive renovation of the Fed’s headquarters.

What to look for in Jerome Powell's speech?

Jerome Powell is set to deliver his eighth and final address at the annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium on Friday. His term is set to expire in May 2026.

World’s top central bankers, economists and financial leaders will gather in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for the key three-day event that starts on Thursday.

For months, Trump has urged the Fed to lower interest rates in an effort to boost economic performance and reduce interest payments on government debt. Trump upped his ante this week, calling on Fed Governor Lisa Cook to resign after a Trump administration official alleged that she had committed mortgage fraud. Cook rebuked the push for her to quit, saying she has “no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet.”

The symposium is closely watched by investors and economists because it provides a stage for Fed officials to share their views on the economy and the direction of monetary policy.

One of the key highlights at Jackson Hole will be whether Powell signals anything about the Fed’s upcoming interest-rate decision on September 17. President Trump has repeatedly pressed the Fed to cut rates, citing strong US economic data and subdued inflation. Powell, however, has largely resisted that pressure, stressing that the central bank is adopting a “wait-and-see” approach while assessing the potential effects of the administration’s tariffs on consumer prices.

Powell's appearance is expected to provide insight into whether the Fed will slacken its monetary policy and cut interest rates, which have been held between 4.25% and 4.5% since December.

"He may offer some soft guidance that rates may move lower at the coming meeting. But this is his last speech at Jackson Hole. He may never again have a platform this influential to offer his view of how his history should be written," economists at UBS wrote, the Reuters report mentioned.

It's also likely that Powell will use the platform to defend his tenure, just like his predecessors, particularly in light of Trump's push for rate cuts.
