'Making fun of your wife is not...': JD Vance faces flak from netizens for his remarks about Usha

US Vice President JD Vance has been called out by a section of social media users for his remarks directed towards his Indian-origin wife Usha Chilukuri Vance. Social media users came out in defence of Usha and supported her when JD Vance made some comments around her. Meant to be humorous, the comments did not go down well with many who found it creepy.

What did JD Vance say?

Speaking at an event in Michigan, Vance praised his Indian-origin spouse as she stood behind him - before suggesting that she has no other option but to laugh at everything he says as they are on camera. He said the Second Lady of the United States has been doing a great job and how proud he is to have her by his side.

"Here's the thing. The cameras are all on; anything I say, no matter how crazy, she has to smile, laugh, and celebrate it," JD Vance said as Usha Vance actually smiled and laughed.


The comments made by JD Vance about his wife Usha did not go down well with a section of users and social media went berserk at his remarks. Usha did indeed smile as her husband made these comments, drawing laughter from the audience. One of them even advised Usha Vance to run away from her marriage with JD.

How netizens reacted

“JD Vance’s comment about his wife was demeaning and controlling. It’s another example of his arrogance, showing disrespect even to his spouse on a public stage. His pattern of divisive remarks proves he’s unfit for leadership,” wrote an X user named Richard.

"His attempt at humor is always tasteles...or is that just me?" one wrote. "That sounds like a threat. She should consult a lawyer and ensure the long-term safety and security of herself and the children. I know how this goes over time in a marriage. The threats get real," another wrote.

"She looks miserable," a third user wrote. "Making fun of your wife is not the flex you think it is," one wrote.

"So Vance is a trad husband influencer now?" one comment read. "JD Vance saying his wife has to “smile, laugh, and celebrate” whatever he says—no matter how crazy—is straight-up creepy. Political spouses who just sit there grinning like puppets aren’t admirable. They’re useless. And it’s 2025. Women aren’t props," one read.

Who is Usha Vance?

Usha Vance is the first Indian-American Second Lady of the United States. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she grew up in San Diego, California in an upper middle class home.

Usha met JD Vance at Yale Law School in the 2010s. The couple got married in 2014, a year after graduating from law school. They now share three children together. In his 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy, JD Vance spoke about the differences between him and his wife Usha. He described her as the “supersmart daughter of Indian immigrants,” while he himself was a “conservative hillbilly from Appalachia.”
