President Donald Trump said he is considering sending rebate checks to Americans using revenue from tariff increases his administration is imposing on US trading partners.
"We have so much money coming in, we're thinking about a little rebate," Trump told reporters outside the White House. "A little rebate for people of a certain income level might be very nice." "But we're thinking about a rebate," Trump added.
Trump added that he was also considering using the tariff revenue to pay down U.S. debt and that “the big thing we want to do is pay down debt.” U.S. debt currently sits at a jaw-dropping $37 trillion.
But President Trump didn't say how big any such check might be, or who would be eligible. It is not the first time this term his administration has floated the idea of rebates. There was talk of a DOGE savings stimulus earlier this year but nothing happened.
According to Treasury data, the US government collected more than $100 billion in tariff revenue in the first half of this year and is on track to collect more than $27 billion this month alone. Most of that has not yet been passed through to consumers, though prices are starting to rise for the most tariff-exposed categories of goods, reports Axios.
Rebates would give consumers back some of the extra money they've spent due to tariffs — but they might also reignite inflation, much like earlier government stimulus efforts. Donald Trump often points out that inflation is largely under control — yet previous stimulus measures, including those from his own administration, have been tied to sharp increases in prices.
