Hamilton on big screens soon: Tickets now on sale in US, Canada. Here's how you can get a free one

Hamilton is finally coming to the big screen! Lin Manuel Miranda on Tuesday's episode of "The Tonight Show" revealed that the movie version of his Tony Award-winning musical “Hamilton” will hit the theaters soon.

Lin-Manuel Miranda said the filmed version of the musical will be given a domestic theatrical release on September 5 in honor of the show's 10th anniversary. The movie version with the original cast previously debuted on Disney+ in July 2020.

“I have an announcement!” Miranda declared during his “Tonight Show” interview. “So, tomorrow is the 10-year anniversary of ‘Hamilton,’ and we’ve been celebrating all year. But we have one more way to celebrate. We filmed most of the original cast performing in ‘Hamilton’ in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted. But, Sept. 5, you will be able to see ‘Hamilton’ in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico.”

The movie version is a “live capture” of the production, filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016 with most of the hit Broadway musical’s original cast, rather than a feature adaptation, à la 2021’s “In The Heights", according to Variety.

Tickets are now on sale for the film, which will be released in theaters in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico on Sept. 5, the U.K. and Ireland on Sept. 26, and Australia and New Zealand on Nov. 13.

The Broadway musical debuted in 2015 and went on to win 11 Tonys and a Pulitzer Prize for drama. The original cast includes Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Jonathan Groff as King George, Renee Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton.

The film rights to Hamilton were sold for $75 million in a deal negotiated by Endeavor Content on behalf of Lin-Manuel Miranda, according to sources familiar with the talks. Before Disney sealed the agreement, Endeavor had pitched the project to several Hollywood studios, including Warner Bros. The resulting Disney+ special went on to earn two Primetime Emmy Awards out of 12 nominations, including outstanding variety special. In June, the original cast reunited for a special performance at the Tony Awards.

Advance tickets for Hamilton?

A special premiere screening is set for Sept. 3 at the Delacorte Theater, home to The Public Theater’s Free Shakespeare in the Park. Advance tickets will be available starting Aug. 11 in exchange for a donation, with proceeds benefiting The Public Theater—where Hamilton premiered in 2015 before moving to Broadway.

On September 3, free tickets will also be distributed via a lottery at The Public Theater, alongside a free standby line in Central Park before the screening begins. Full details are available on The Public Theater’s website.

While fans can expect to catch the long-running show in New York's Theatre District, elsewhere in Washington, D.C., producers pulled the plug on a planned performance at the Kennedy Center for 2026.

The move followed a move by President Donald Trump to clean house at the arts organization, firing the chairman and installing himself as the board leader. The reason for the overhaul, the president said, was based on the organization's decision to host a drag show performance.

"THIS WILL STOP," he wrote on Truth Social at the time. "The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation."

In response, "Hamilton" producer Jeffrey Seller pulled two scheduled performances of the touring show and wrote in a statement: "Political disagreement and debate are vital expressions of democracy. These basic concepts of freedom are at the very heart of 'Hamilton.' However, some institutions are sacred and should be protected from politics. The Kennedy Center is one such institution."
