"I call upon all Americans to celebrate the achievements of Irish Americans and their contributions to our Nation with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs," Trump said in his proclamation. As he signed the proclamation in the Oval Office on Thursday, Donald Trump said of the Irish: "They're great people, great people."
Trump hailed the importance of Irish in America days ahead of Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Micheál Martin's visit to the White House to celebrate St Patrick's Day. In the proclamation, Trump said March will "commemorate the special bond of friendship between the United States and Ireland" and "honor the extraordinary contributions of Irish-American citizens past and present", according to BBC.

The proclamation describes Irish-Americans as "some of the toughest, most driven, and most devoted people on the face of the Earth".
"Their faith in God, love of family, and indelible commitment to our national promise continue to inspire citizens all across our country." Signing the proclamation, Trump said the Irish were "great people", adding: "They voted for me in heavy numbers so I like them even more."
All about Irish-American Heritage Month
Since 1991, March has been recognized as Irish-American Heritage Month—initially established by a law passed by Congress and, since 1997, commemorated annually through a presidential proclamation.This month honors the contributions of Irish immigrants and their descendants to American society. Each year, the US president issues a proclamation to celebrate the occasion. Throughout March, cultural events, exhibitions, and educational programs are held to showcase the achievements of Irish-Americans.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, millions of Irish immigrants left Ireland for cities like Boston, Chicago, and New York, seeking new opportunities and a better future for their families, according to the proclamation.
The proclamation further notes that Irish-Americans have "fought for our freedom on the battlefield, served in government, and founded pioneering businesses," leaving a lasting impact on their communities and the nation's identity.
It also emphasizes the enduring friendship between the United States and Ireland, which is strengthened by economic ties, a shared commitment to democracy, and common values of faith, family, and freedom.
"My administration is working to address trade imbalances with the European Union," it states, "and our historic relationship with Ireland offers an opportunity to promote fairer trade policies and stronger investment that benefit both nations."
"To this day, Irish Americans are known as some of the toughest, most driven, and most devoted people on the face of the Earth. Their faith in God, love of family, and indelible commitment to our national promise continue to inspire citizens all across our country. This Irish-American Heritage Month, we salute the undying resilience and resolve of the Irish-American community, pay tribute to their tremendous achievements, and pledge to forge a future that strengthens our shared values, deepens our traditions, and restores America as one glorious Nation under God," the proclamation read.
