'Life-threatening' ingredient in popular US ice-cream brand prompts FDA's urgent recall: What should you do?

Blue Bell Ice Cream has recalled Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream half gallons packaged in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cartons produced in its Brenham, TX, plant because of undeclared almond, walnut and pecan. The batch of products was recalled after a serious packaging mix-up was discovered, as per the US Sun. Moo-llennium Crunch ice cream being packaged incorrectly in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cartons prompted the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to take the step.

Blue Bell is urging anyone who purchased the affected ice cream to return it to the store for a full refund. Consuming the mispackaged ice cream could trigger severe or life-threatening allergic reactions.

Popular ice cream brand recalled in US

There’s a Blue Bell ice cream recall underway in 16 states because of undeclared almonds, walnuts and pecans on the label of their Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream. The mix-up was uncovered by a Blue Bell employee in Brenham, Texas, while restocking a retailer.

“Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream packaged in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cartons with a Moo-llennium Crunch lid contains undeclared almonds, walnuts, and pecans,” the company said. It added that only half-gallon containers with the lid code 061027524 are affected.

People with nut allergies risk serious reactions, including anaphylaxis, which can cause difficulty breathing, swelling, dizziness, and loss of consciousness.

No illnesses or injuries have been reported so far with Blue Bell confirming that no other packaging errors have been found. The affected ice cream was produced at the company’s Brenham plant in Texas.

It was distributed to stores in 16 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida Panhandle, Northwest Georgia, Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Southwest Virginia.

What can you do?

According to the FDA, half gallons of Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream were packaged in a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough half gallon carton with a Moo-llennium Crunch lid, hence the reason why the nuts aren’t declared on the packaging. A consumer could easily pick up a package of this treat thinking that it’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, only to discover it’s actually Moo-llennium Crunch.

If you think you may have one of the affected packages, look for this code on the top of the half gallon lid: 061027524.

Shoppers can spot the recalled product by its Moo-llennium Crunch lid mistakenly placed on a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough carton.

Blue Bell has urged customers who purchased the affected ice cream to return it to the store for a full refund. The company emphasized that the recall is voluntary and is being carried out under the oversight of the FDA.

According to Blue Bell, the company acted immediately to remove the mislabeled cartons from circulation, and retailers in the affected regions have already been instructed to pull them from shelves.

For easy identification, Blue Bell released an image of the recalled product in its official announcement. The brand also reassured customers that the recall is limited in scope and that no other Blue Bell products are impacted.

Consumers are strongly advised to check their freezers before eating any recently purchased Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream.
