In a heartbreaking social media post, Balin Miller's mother confirmed his death and wrote, "My heart is shattered in a million pieces. I don't know how I will get through this. I love him so much. I want to wake up from this horrible nightmare."
“This is unthinkable,” Jeanine Moorman wrote in tribute to her son. “At this time, we do not yet know all the details. What we do know is that the world has lost an extraordinary soul, and our hearts are shattered.”
Moorman went on to describe her son as having “a touch of Robin Williams’ wild energy. Strategic, curious, and endlessly playful, he brought light wherever he went.” Many posted tributes to Miller on social media, saying they had watched him climb on a TikTok livestream for two days before his death and referring to him as "orange tent guy" because of his distinctive camp setup.

Who is Balin Miller?
Balin Miller is a well-known figure in the climbing community and would frequently stream some of his climbs on TikTok and was affectionately known as “orange tent guy” due to his eye-catching camping equipment. Though the details of his death still remain unclear, his brother told news agency AFP he was lead rope soloing - a technique that enables climbing alone while still protected by a rope - on a 2,400ft (730m) route named Sea of Dreams.Balin Miller was originally from Anchorage and grew up climbing with his father and brother. He was an accomplished alpinist and gained international attention for claiming the first solo ascent of Mount McKinley's Slovak Direct, which took him 56 hours to complete, according to a post on his Instagram in June.

Miller's mother revealed his early years in the sport were spent in the mountains of Alaska, before graduating to “cliffs and ranges across the world, living a nomadic life in pursuit of adventure". In June, Miller completed what is believed to be the first solo climb of the Slovak Direct route on Mount McKinley in Alaska, North America’s highest peak also known as Denali.
“Balin was full of life – a true wild card at heart,” she added. “He lived simply, often out of his silver Prius, scraping together a shoestring income to support his greatest passion: climbing.”

"He's had probably one of the most impressive last six months of climbing of anyone I can think of," veteran alpinist Clint Helander told the Anchorage Daily News in July. Another renowned Alaskan climber Mark Westman, compared him to Alex Honnold, who became the first person to free solo a full route on El Capitan.
