Consumers who own a Siri-enabled device — including iPhones, MacBooks and AppleTVs — may be eligible to file a financial claim as part of Apple's $95 million settlement

Tech giant Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a class-action lawsuit involving Siri voice assistant. Earlier this year, Apple agreed to pay $95 million to settle a 2019 lawsuit accusing the tech company of deploying its virtual assistant Siri to eavesdrop on people using its iPhone and other devices.

The settlement stems from accusations that Siri recorded users' private conversations and, in some cases, passed them on to third-party contractors for evaluation. Apple users can file claims with a new website set up for the case. The $95 million settlement stems from public backlash after a 2019 investigation by The Guardian revealed that Apple contractors had access to sensitive audio recordings from Siri, including private medical details and personal conversations.

Who is eligible to get a payout?

Consumers who own a Siri-enabled device — including iPhones, MacBooks and AppleTVs — may be eligible to file a financial claim as part of Apple's $95 million settlement over allegations that the voice assistant eavesdropped on them. According to a report in The Verge, individuals who owned eligible Apple devices over a specific period and believe they were affected by this alleged issue can submit claims to receive a portion – up to $100 – of the settlement money.

Users must have owned or purchased a Siri-enabled device—such as an iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, HomePod, iPod touch or Apple TV—between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024 to be eligible for compensation. Moreover, they must have also experienced unintended Siri activation during a private conversation during that period of time. Each approved device is eligible for a payout of up to $20, with a cap of five devices per claimant, meaning a person could be eligible for up to $100, according to NewsWeek.

According to the official settlement site, anyone who meets the following criteria can file a claim:

Apple adamantly denied any wrongdoing and maintains that it would have been cleared of any misconduct had the case gone to trial.

In an earlier statement, Apple said, "Siri has been engineered to protect user privacy from the beginning," and that "Siri data has never been used to build marketing profiles and it has never been sold to anyone for any purpose."
