Sex toys being thrown onto or toward the court at as many as five WNBA games over the past 10 days

A sex toy was thrown on to the court in the closing seconds of the Atlanta Dream’s 86-65 victory over the Chicago Sky on Thursday night, the latest such incident at a WNBA game. Sex toys also were thrown on court during games in Atlanta on 29 July Chicago on Friday and Los Angeles on Tuesday. The play was momentarily stopped after a purple toy was thrown from the stands.

A man was arrested Saturday in College Park, Georgia, after he was accused of throwing a sex toy on to the court during the Dream’s 29 July game with the Golden State Valkyries, according to a police report. The report said he threw another sex toy during the Dream’s game on Friday against the Phoenix Mercury.

In another similar incident, an Arizona teenager was arrested after he threw a sex toy into the crowd at a Phoenix Mercury game, police said. This is the fourth time such an incident has unfolded at a WNBA contest in the past two weeks.

The suspect, identified as Kaden Lopez, 18, was booked on suspicion of disorderly conduct, assault and public display of explicit sexual material after he threw a green sex toy toward seats in front of him at PHX Arena during the game against the Connecticut Sun, court documents alleged, according to NBC. Police say the 18-year-old pulled the sex toy from his sweater pocket and threw it toward seats in front of him, striking a spectator in the back.

The WNBA said any spectators throwing objects onto the court will face at least a one-year ban and prosecution from law enforcement.

Sex toys thrown during WNBA games

Sex toys being thrown onto or toward the court at as many as five WNBA games over the past 10 days. According to USA Today, a cryptocurrency group has claimed responsibility for organising multiple incidents where sex toys were thrown onto courts during WNBA games, leading to two arrests.

The group behind the meme coin, Green Dildo Coin, revealed that they staged these incidents to attract attention without spending money on influencers. The events kicked off on July 29, when a sex toy was thrown onto the court during an Atlanta Dream game against the Golden State Valkyries. In the following week, similar items were tossed at several other games. A fourth sex toy, this time purple, was thrown during the Atlanta Dream’s 86-65 win over the Chicago Sky.

"We didn't do this because, like, we dislike women's sports or, like, some of the narratives that are trending right now are ridiculous," an unnamed spokesman for the group told USA Today. "We knew that in order to get a voice in the space ... we had to go out and do some viral stunts to save us from having to pay that influencer cabal, sacrifice our souls and the fate of the project."

The cryptocurrency group's spokesperson clarified that neither Delbert Carter—who was arrested in Atlanta for throwing a green sex toy—nor Kaden Lopez have any affiliation with their organization. According to reports, Lopez told Phoenix Police that his actions were influenced by social media trends.

An anonymous source told USA Today, "Going forward, we have many more pranks planned, but they will be much lighter and more tasteful." Meanwhile, the WNBA released a statement confirming that they are collaborating with arena staff to identify those responsible and take appropriate measures. The league has not yet responded to the cryptocurrency group’s claims of involvement in these incidents.
