Comet 3I/ATLAS swings around the Sun (its perihelion) on 30 October 2025, coming within 1.4 astronomical units (AU) of the Sun.
The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS has sparked a wave of curiosity among scientists. Comet 3I/ATLAS was discovered on 1 July 2025, and since then, astronomers have been doing everything they can to learn as much about it as they can. Reason? This is because, unlike other comets, 3I/ATLAS doesn't orbit the Sun. It's an interstellar comet, and one of only three we've ever seen.

This means it entered our Solar System from elsewhere in the Galaxy, and will eventually exit it. When it does leave our Solar System, it will be gone forever. According to a BBC report, interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is thought to be at least 7 billion years old, making it likely twice as old as Earth, and the oldest comet we've ever seen.

Comet 3I/ATLAS viewing in USA

The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is passing through our solar system and if you are in the United States, November and early December 2025 offer the best chance to see it. 3I/ATLAS is only the third confirmed interstellar object ever recorded passing through our solar system- after 1I/ʻOumuamua (2017) and 2I/Borisov (2019). Comet 3I/ATLAS swings around the Sun (its perihelion) on 30 October 2025, coming within 1.4 astronomical units (AU) of the Sun. The interstellar visitor will pass approximately 1.8 AU (about 269 million km) from Earth on 19 December 2025.

You cannot view 3I/ATLAS from your naked eyes despite its exotic origin. It is faint- estimated around magnitude 12 to 18 — and thus beyond binocular visibility. But the best period recommended to watch interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is early November to mid December 2025 and that too, 90 minutes before sunrise, while the sky is still dark and the horizon clear.

Do you need any equipment? The answer is Yes. Sky gazers and enthusiasts would need a large amateur telescope (10-inch aperture or larger) under dark rural skies will improve your chances. 3I/ATLAS will likely appear as a dim, slow-moving speck — no bright tail, no major comet show.

Where can you watch comet 3I/ATLAS in US?

The visibility of comet 3I/ATLAS depends on factors like latitude, horizon clarity, and light pollution. In most parts of the United States, the interstellar comet can be seen about 2 hours before sunrise and set quickly as the Sun climbs. But you need to plan your viewing your activity carefully. Observatories in the American Southwest and Hawaii are expected to get the clearest professional-grade images, according to a TOI report.

You can watch comet 3I/ATLAS in these regions in US:

-Regions such as Arizona, New Mexico and Texas have an optimal window from Nov 5 to Dec 10

-Southern California and Nevada: Nov 10 to Dec 15.

-Florida, Georgia and Alabama: Nov 5 to Dec 10.

-Midwest (Kansas, Missouri, Illinois): Nov 10 to Dec 5.

Objects like 3I/ATLAS offer a rare window into material from outside our solar system — fragments of other planetary systems that formed billions of years ago. Scientists have even been able to get Mars rovers and orbiters to look at 3I/ATLAS while it's hidden from Earth, as it travels close to the Sun. By studying its composition, motion and behaviour, scientists hope to learn how such interstellar visitors compare to the countless comets that originated in our own solar system.
