The head of the WTO has welcomed upcoming talks between US and Chinese officials this weekend, calling them a "positive and constructive step toward de-escalation" in their ongoing trade dispute, her spokesperson said on Friday.

The head of the WTO welcomes talks between US and Chinese officials this weekend as a "positive and constructive step toward de-escalation" in their trade war, her spokesperson said Friday.

"Sustained dialogue between the world's two largest economies is critical to easing trade tensions, preventing fragmentation along geopolitical lines and safeguarding global growth," said Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organization, according to the spokesperson.
