UK's Birmingham Airport operations gradually resume after security incident

Operations at Birmingham Airport in central England are gradually returning to normal following a precautionary evacuation due to a report of a suspicious vehicle. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, led to the suspension of all flights as police investigated the situation.

West Midlands Police announced, “Birmingham airport is currently being evacuated following a report of a suspicious vehicle. This is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.” As a result, the airport's operations were halted, and passengers were advised against coming to the airport. Birmingham Airport stated that police were on-site “dealing with an incident,” which necessitated the suspension of all departing flights.

During the investigation, the airport advised travelers, “Airport operations are currently impacted, and passengers should not come to the airport at this time.” The evacuation of the airport affected thousands of passengers, given that it serves as the UK’s seventh busiest airport, with 11.5 million passengers recorded last year.


The impact of the evacuation led to significant flight delays. Ryanair's flight FR664 to Birmingham from Dublin, originally scheduled for 3:10 PM, was pushed back to 4:45 PM. Meanwhile, EasyJet flight EZY31 remained available for check-in at Belfast International as the situation began to stabilize, with check-in opening from 4:35 PM.

Following the conclusion of the police investigation, the airport spokesperson confirmed that operations would slowly resume. They urged all passengers to check the latest flight information from their respective airlines.
