UK man wins £7.5 million in lottery, but chooses to go back to clearing drains
James Clarkson, a 20-year-old trainee gas engineer from Carlisle, won a life-changing £7.5 million (Rs 80 crore) jackpot in the first National Lottery draw of 2025. Despite his newfound fortune, James returned to work the next day, unclogging drai...

Discovering the Life-Changing Win
James first realised he had won while at his girlfriend’s house. “I was at my girlfriend’s house and got up early to check on the snowfall when I saw a message saying I’d won on the National Lottery app,” he told The Metro. Initially, he struggled to believe it, adding, “I just didn’t believe it; I thought I was dreaming. It was only 7:30 am, so everyone was asleep.”Unsure of the result, James called his father, Stephen, who reassured him and advised him to come home to confirm. “He calmly told me to come home and we’d have a look,” James recalled. Once back with his parents and brother, the family anxiously waited until the National Lottery helpline opened at 9 am to confirm the win.
“They eventually confirmed mine was the winning ticket. I think I just started laughing. I thought, ‘This is mad,’” James said. He spent the rest of the day visiting family and sharing the news before celebrating with a roast beef dinner and champagne at his grandparents’ house.
Returning to Work Despite Wealth
Remarkably, James returned to work the next day, fixing blocked drains in freezing temperatures. “I was out in the cold fixing blocked drains the day after I found out I had won. It was a bit grim, but that’s reality. I’m not going to stop working; I’m too young,” he explained. James plans to continue working towards his goal of becoming a heating engineer, valuing the structure and purpose work provides.Balancing Enjoyment and Responsibility
While James has indulged in a few luxuries, including a Gucci bag for his girlfriend, two designer jackets, and plans for a holiday in Cape Verde, his primary focus remains his family. He has decided to pay off his parents’ mortgage, a gesture that deeply moved them.“I have a big family, and we are all close. News spread fast, and we all ended up celebrating later,” James said, describing his family-oriented celebration.
As a lifelong Manchester City fan, James is also considering purchasing a season ticket to attend more matches. He’s excited about enjoying simple pleasures while remaining grounded.
A Grounded Perspective
Despite his sudden fortune, James believes in maintaining a sense of normality. “My dad keeps reminding me that many millionaires still work. It’s important to have a reason to get up every day,” he said. His response to the win reflects a humble and thoughtful approach to wealth, balancing personal enjoyment with a commitment to his family and future.Even after the monumental win, James emphasised the importance of staying true to his values and remaining connected to his roots. His determination to keep working and help his family demonstrates a maturity beyond his years, making his story one of inspiration and grounded success.
