Thomas, 24, was found guilty of stabbing Bush, 23, a staggering 37 times with a kitchen knife and a flick knife. Hours before the attack, Thomas had searched online for the anatomy of the neck. Though he admitted to manslaughter, he denied committing murder.
A "Planned Attack"
The BBC revealed that Thomas is the grandson of Sir Stanley Thomas, whose family founded Peter's Pies. Prosecutors described the killing as a "planned attack."On the day of the murder, Thomas’s grandmother, Sharon Burton, drove him to the house. Upon arrival, he retrieved the weapons, entered Bush's bedroom, and launched the fatal assault. Witnesses nearby reported hearing "screams of horror" from the home.
After the attack, Thomas called 999, claiming Bush had "gone mental" and stabbed him. However, prosecutors argued it was a premeditated crime. Judge Steyn described the murder as "particularly terrifying," highlighting that Bush was attacked in the safety of his bedroom by someone he trusted.
Grieving Family Speaks Out
Bush’s family and girlfriend shared emotional statements during the trial. His sister, Catrin, called the act "barbaric and cruel," while his father, John, said the murder had "profoundly" changed their lives. Bush's girlfriend, Ella Jefferies, spoke of their shattered future, describing him as "the love of my life."A Troubling Past
According to the BBC, Thomas had been in a "downward spiral" in the months leading up to the murder. He had been arrested weeks earlier for attempting to climb the fence at Buckingham Palace and was released on police bail. After his arrest for the murder, Thomas displayed erratic behaviour, reportedly telling officers he was Jesus and offering them "jobs with God." His defence argued that he regretted not seeking psychiatric help earlier, presenting evidence that he had been psychotic for months before the killing.
Condemnation of the Attack
Chris Evans from the Crown Prosecution Service condemned the murder as a "shocking level of violence." South Wales Police described it as an unprovoked betrayal of trust.Thomas’s family, whose fortune originated from the Peter's Pies company founded in the 1950s, sold the business in 1988.
