US President Donald Trump sent tariff letters to more than 20 countries, escalating trade tensions across the globe. The tariffs would be imposed on imported goods from partners who fail to reach agreements with the US, effective from August 1.

The U.S. president is growing the list of his target countries imposing steep tariffs as a threat to drag nations, large and small, into his trade war.

This move follows Trump’s public statement on July 7, where he confirmed that the "higher duties announced in earlier months will kick in with delay on August 1, as the U.S. closes on completion of several trade deals."

On Tuesday, President Trump sent tariff letters to 14 countries including Japan, South Africa and North Korea warning of higher tariffs if trade deals aren't reached.

Later on Thursday, Trump issued tariff letters to eight more countries including Brazil, Philippines, Algeria, Libya, Iraq and Sri Lanka.

Donald Trump issued the latest tariff letter to Canada on Friday.
