Trump-Xi dinner: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman, Huang, Nadella among star-studded guest list

Billionaires, technology chiefs, Wall Street heavyweights, senior US officials and members of US President Donald Trump’s family gathered at the White House for a state dinner hosted for Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan.

The guest list brought together some of the biggest names in the US technology industry, including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Apple executive chairman Tim Cook and AMD CEO Lisa Su.

The dinner also featured major figures from the financial world including JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser and Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell. LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault was also among the guests.

The White House guest list included more than 130 people and was heavy on technology and business leaders, reflecting the central role of artificial intelligence, advanced chips, computing infrastructure and trade in the broader US-China relationship. Chinese business executives, however, were absent from the published list, despite discussions about potentially including some Chinese corporate leaders, according to reports.

Trump and Xi were the guests of honour at the dinner, which followed a day of formal ceremonies and bilateral talks at the White House. Trump, dressed in a tuxedo, and first lady Melania Trump welcomed Xi and Peng, with Xi wearing a black suit and Peng a red gown.

Trump used his dinner toast to highlight his personal relationship with Xi, saying the two leaders had forged a “truly great friendship”. He said the US and China represented different systems but that ties between their peoples endured.

Xi, in his toast, linked Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda with China’s goal of national rejuvenation, saying the two ambitions could be mutually reinforcing.

The bilateral talks between the two leaders earlier Thursday covered trade, AI and broader strategic issues between Washington and Beijing. Xi also said the two countries should maintain a “constructive strategic and stable” relationship.

AI emerged as one of the key areas of discussion, with Xi saying the US and China had both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage artificial intelligence for the benefit of people and ensure that its development remained under human control.

The leaders also discussed global and regional issues including the Middle East, the Russia-Ukraine war and the Korean Peninsula, according to the Chinese government readout quoted by AP. Xi said China supported dialogue between the US and Iran and called for negotiations toward a comprehensive agreement, including on Iran’s nuclear programme.

The White House dinner came during Xi’s three-day US state visit, his first state visit to Washington in more than a decade.
