In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly suggested on social media that Canada should become the 51st state of the US. He even used Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement of his plan to step down as an opportunity to reiterate his stance on annexing Canada. Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, the incoming US president shared a map showing Canada as a part of the United States, and wrote, "Oh Canada!"
On Tuesday, Trump refused to rule out the use of "economic force" to acquire Canada.
Trump has also expressed interest in purchasing Greenland and taking control of the Panama Canal. Additionally, he proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America."
Trump, who has long criticized Canada's trade surplus with the U.S., previously referred to the border between the two countries as an "artificially drawn line." He has also threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, which account for 75% of Canada's total goods and services exports to the US.
Earlier on Tuesday, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly dismissed Trump's comments, saying, "They show a complete lack of understanding of what makes Canada a strong country. We will never back down in the face of threats."
Trudeau announced on Monday that he would step down in the coming months, citing mounting pressure from lawmakers concerned about his Liberal Party's declining popularity. The next federal election, scheduled for October 20, is expected to result in a decisive victory for the opposition Conservatives, according to recent polls.
"Canada will never be the 51st state. Period. We are a great and independent country," Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
