US President Donald Trump on Wednesday amplified a sharp New York Post editorial criticising Russian President Vladimir Putin, sharing the newspaper’s opinion piece without adding any comment of his own.

This development comes just days after Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss prospects for ending the war.

Trump reposted the editorial, titled “Putin ‘attack’ bluster shows Russia is the one standing in the way of peace,” on Truth Social, offering no personal remarks alongside it.

The Post’s editorial contrasts Trump’s optimism earlier this week following his meeting with Zelenskyy over progress toward a peace deal with what it describes as the setback that followed a phone call between Trump and Putin on Monday.

According to the piece, Putin told Trump that Russia would revise its negotiating position, alleging that Ukrainian drones had targeted one of his residences.

Casting doubt on that claim--an allegation Ukraine has denied--the editorial says that “on cue, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin chose lies, hatred, and death instead.”

What NY Post's editorial says about Putin

It argues that Putin rebuffed peace overtures made by Trump, stating, “Just as he did in Alaska, Putin was offered peace and instead spat in America’s eye,” and adds that “Vladimir Putin is not an honest broker who can see reason, nor a business opportunity to be unlocked.”

The editorial calls for tougher action against Moscow, framing the case in terms directed at Trump personally. It says Russia’s support for Iran and its backing of Venezuela’s leadership show that “across the world, Russia is opposing Trump’s agenda.”

“The answer should not be more concessions, but a bigger stick,” the editorial says. “Kyiv has done its part. The onus should be on Putin to step up or face more stringent sanctions and more deadly weapons in Ukraine.”

CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly briefed Trump on US intelligence related to Russia’s claim before the president shared the Post’s editorial casting doubt on Putin’s accusation, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Elsewhere, the Wall Street Journal has previously reported that US national security officials doubt Russia’s version of events and that a CIA assessment found no such attack attempt against Putin had occurred.

Ukraine has denied the alleged drone attack, calling it a Russian fabrication intended to derail peace talks. Trump, however, told reporters earlier this week that he was “very angry” about the purported incident.

“It’s one thing to be offensive, because they’re offensive,” Trump said. “It’s another thing to attack his house. It’s not the right time to do any of that.”

The Post’s editorial flatly rejects Russia’s explanation, arguing that “common sense points to an invented or embellished narrative to give Russia an excuse to reject Trump’s progress.”
