In a move blending regulatory rollback with a dash of humour, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday aimed at reworking the federal standards for showerheads, a cause he has long championed.

The order is designed to “end the Obama-Biden war on water pressure” and restore what the Trump White House has dubbed “shower freedom” to the American people.

Trump has often expressed frustration with modern water-conservation appliances, particularly showerheads, which he claims don’t provide enough pressure to properly wash his “beautiful hair.”

"I like to take a nice shower, take care of my beautiful hair," he said Wednesday, reported AP. "I have to stand in the shower for 15 minutes until it gets wet. Comes out drip, drip, drip. It's ridiculous.”

While the White House has made it clear that the new rule is intended to “make America’s showers great again,” but it’s unclear whether this will result in any significant changes from showerhead manufacturers, who have already adapted to the current water-saving standards.

War on water

However, his complaint isn’t a new one—Trump has previously slammed low-flow models, claiming that they cause water to drip slowly, forcing him to spend excessive amounts of time just to get his hair wet.

The new executive order will reverse the water-saving standards for showerheads, dishwashers, and other household appliances that were implemented under Presidents Obama and Biden, which had aimed to conserve water and energy.

"What you do is you end up washing your hands five times longer, so it's the same water,'' the Republican President added. "And we're going to open it up so that people can live."

The White House statementsaid that the restrictions had "turned a basic household item into a bureaucratic nightmare" and added that “No longer will showerheads be weak and worthless.”

The Trump administration’s move to relax water conservation rules is part of a broader effort to reverse many of the environmental policies set during Obama and Biden’s presidencies.

Trump had already rolled back energy efficiency standards on dishwashers and other household appliances during his first term, and now, with this new order, he’s turning his attention back to the issue of water pressure in the shower.
