Tornado weather tears through Capital Region, toppling trees and shutting down county fair

A powerful storm swept through New York’s Capital Region on Thursday, leaving behind downed trees, scattered debris, power disruptions and road concerns across several communities.

The storm was strong enough to force the Washington County Fair to close early for safety, while residents in parts of Wilton dealt with fallen trees, damaged power lines and darkened intersections, according to a report by News10.

In some neighborhoods, the cleanup began almost as soon as the storm moved out.

Neighbors step in as fallen trees block streets

On Greylock Drive in Wilton, the storm left a particularly visible trail of damage.

News10 reported that large trees came down along the street, with one falling onto an SUV. Branches and other debris covered parts of the roadway as residents worked together after dark to begin clearing the area.

Car headlights helped illuminate the cleanup as neighbors used saws to break apart fallen trees and move debris from the street, according to News10's report.

Elsewhere in the neighborhood, a group of local teenagers and their mothers decided to tackle the smaller debris themselves.

Calling themselves “The Broom Crew,” the group spent roughly two hours sweeping branches, leaves and other storm debris from the roads after the weather had passed.

Katie Zeh told News10 that a tree had fallen near her home and into the roadway, prompting the group to grab brooms and begin clearing what they could.

Their effort became one of the more striking scenes from a storm that disrupted communities across the Capital Region.

Power outages create traffic problems in Wilton

The storm also knocked out electricity in several parts of Wilton, creating another challenge for drivers.

According to News10, some traffic signals stopped working because of the power outages, forcing motorists to treat affected intersections as four-way stops.

Downed trees and impacted power lines added to the disruption as crews and residents assessed the damage left behind.

The extent of the storm damage varied across the region, but Thursday’s weather event was significant enough to affect both residential neighborhoods and major public events.

Washington County Fair shuts down early

In Washington County, officials made the decision to close the Washington County Fair for the remainder of Thursday evening as the approaching weather worsened.

Fair officials consulted with the National Weather Service before ending operations and closing the fairgrounds at 6 p.m., News10 reported.

The decision was made as a precaution, with organisers citing concerns for the safety of visitors, workers and others at the fairgrounds.

Officials later said the roads surrounding the site had reopened, and the fair was expected to resume as scheduled on Friday. The annual event was set to continue through Sunday.

The early closure underscored how quickly the storm conditions changed across parts of the Capital Region.

Rensselaer County watches its roads after earlier storm damage

Thursday’s storm also came as Rensselaer County continued recovering from a previous round of severe weather that had caused road closures across the area.

News10 reported that County Road 50 had recently reopened, while Simons Road in the town of Schodack was also cleared and reopened with help from county crews.

Schodack had been among the communities hit hardest during the earlier storm event, county spokesperson Rich Crist told News10.

With a road network spanning roughly 330 miles, the county has been working to maintain and repair its infrastructure while dealing with repeated weather-related disruptions.

Crist told News10 that the county had previously completed a major paving effort across its road system and hoped the roads would avoid further damage.

But after another stormy Thursday, officials and residents across the Capital Region were again left dealing with the effects of severe weather.

From a tree falling onto an SUV in Wilton to an early shutdown at the Washington County Fair, the storm left a reminder of how quickly conditions can change — and how communities often find themselves handling the aftermath together, one fallen branch and blocked road at a time.
