Aspinall, 33, last competed in October, when his fight against Ciryl Gane in Abu Dhabi ended in a first-round no-contest following multiple eye pokes. The injury led to a series of medical procedures and kept him out of competition for months.
Why did Tom Aspinall vacate the UFC heavyweight title?
Aspinall announced his decision on Monday, explaining that his ongoing eye problems mean he cannot currently be cleared to fight. “I've had multiple surgeries, accidents and infections, and done everything possible to get back to competing,” Aspinall said. The heavyweight star also addressed questions about his silence, saying he had followed the UFC's guidance while focusing on his recovery. “I have now made the decision to vacate the Heavyweight Title,” he said.
Aspinall explained that he did not want his medical situation to prevent other heavyweight fighters from competing for the championship.
“I asked the UFC to allow me to make this statement because I don't want to hold the Heavyweight division up,” he said. “I know what it's like to have your career put on hold and I want the other fighters to have the opportunity to compete for the title.”
He stressed that vacating the belt does not mean he is walking away from MMA. Instead, he plans to concentrate on recovering fully, obtaining medical clearance and returning when he is healthy enough to compete. “The UFC and Hunter [Campbell, UFC CBO] have been informed every step of the way and have seen the tests, procedures and medical information relating to my eyes,” Aspinall said. “We have worked closely with different doctors and specialists to try and make my return happen but, unfortunately, it is simply not possible right now.”
Aspinall also expressed frustration that some of his current problems stem from fouls that, in his view, significantly altered the course of his career.
“What makes this particularly difficult is that many of the complications I'm dealing with are a result of fouls that changed the course of my career,” he said.
He thanked his supporters and vowed to return when medically able.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this absolute nightmare. I'll be back as soon as I'm medically able to be.”
