Tim Curry, the acclaimed actor best known for his iconic roles in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has died at age 80.

Curry died Tuesday night at his home in Los Angeles, according to his longtime manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz. His cause of death has not been disclosed. Curry had suffered a stroke in 2012 that left him using a wheelchair, but there is no official indication that the stroke was related to his death.

Born in Cheshire, England, Curry was the son of a Navy chaplain and a school secretary. He studied drama at the University of Birmingham before moving to London and beginning his professional theater career. His path eventually led him to the Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal Court Theatre, where he landed the role that would change his life: Frank-N-Furter.

Curry never married and had no children and remained intensely private about his personal life.

Known for his distinctive voice, sharp humor and ability to portray eccentric villains, Curry built a remarkable career across stage, film and television. He earned three Tony Award nominations for Spamalot, My Favorite Year and Amadeus, as well as an Emmy nomination in 1994.

“I like playing the more curious corners of the human mind and human behavior, partly because they’re a tad more interesting,” Curry told The Associated Press in 1993.

Curry shot to fame playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show, the sci-fi rock musical that premiered in London in 1973. He later took the role to Broadway before starring in the 1975 film adaptation alongside Barry Bostwick, Meat Loaf and Susan Sarandon.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show became one of the most enduring cult movies in cinema history, with its boundary-pushing characters, memorable songs and interactive midnight screenings helping cement its place in pop culture. Curry's performance as the flamboyant Frank-N-Furter became his signature role.

The character's famous British accent almost sounded very different. Curry initially experimented with German and American accents before hearing a British woman on a bus and deciding that was the voice he wanted.

“I met a woman on a bus who said, ‘Do you have a house in town or a house in the country’ and I thought, ‘That’s the voice!’” he recalled to LA Magazine in 2015.

Curry also became widely recognized by a new generation for playing the smug concierge at New York's Plaza Hotel in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. His other notable screen roles included the child-killing creature Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's It, Wadsworth in Clue, a medical officer in The Hunt for Red October, Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers and a villain in Annie.

He was also a celebrated stage performer, starring as Mozart in Amadeus, King Arthur in Spamalot and in Tom Stoppard's Travesties. He played Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at New York's Madison Square Garden in 2001.

Later in his career, Curry became a prolific voice actor, lending his distinctive baritone to productions including Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Wild Thornberrys and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius.

His death marks the loss of an actor whose career crossed generations and genres. From Frank-N-Furter and Pennywise to Wadsworth and the Plaza Hotel concierge, Curry created some of the most distinctive and memorable characters in film, television and theater.
