The Rudan Brothers surprise Canadian couple with free roof repair, then transform entire home after learning wife is battling two forms of cancer

A simple offer to repair a damaged roof turned into an extraordinary act of kindness for a Canadian couple facing one of the hardest periods of their lives.

The Rudan Brothers, known for helping families with home-improvement projects at no cost, arrived at Hubert and Anne’s home in Stouffville, Canada, after hearing about their badly damaged roof. But after meeting the couple and learning that Anne was battling cancer and preparing to begin chemotherapy, the brothers decided a roof repair would not be enough.

‘I have two forms of cancer. And I’m starting chemo very soon’

Part of the couple’s roof was covered by a large tarp when the brothers arrived. Hubert explained that the roof had been leaking but that he could not afford to have it repaired.

“We are roofers and we like to offer to fix your roof completely free,” one of the brothers told him in their YouTube video.

Hubert was stunned by the offer and went inside to tell Anne. During their conversation, Anne shared the difficult news that she was battling two forms of cancer.

“I have two forms of cancer. And I’m starting chemo very soon,” she said. The revelation made the brothers even more determined to help the family.

The free roof repair becomes a full home makeover

Once work began, the team discovered that the roof was in worse condition than expected. The old shingles were severely deteriorated, with some able to be pulled away by hand. Several sheets of plywood also had to be replaced.

The team eventually repaired the roof, improved ventilation and addressed the source of the leak.

But they weren't finished. “We’re going to transform your whole house,” the brothers told Hubert and Anne.

The project grew to include new siding, gutters, soffits, fascia, a rebuilt porch, a new deck and a completely new shed, along with other repairs around the property.

A collapsing shed gets rebuilt from scratch

The couple’s old backyard shed was in such poor condition that it had to be demolished. Hubert had initially asked whether some of the old siding could be saved so he could use it to repair the structure. Instead, the brothers decided to build him an entirely new 10x10 shed.

With help from experienced framer Bob and Dragon, the team constructed the shed from the ground up, giving the family a sturdy new storage space.

The generosity even extended beyond Hubert and Anne's home. After neighbours Tim and Vanessa helped with the project, the brothers noticed their gutters were also badly damaged and offered to replace them for free.

Neighbours join the brothers in helping the couple

The renovation soon became a community effort. Neighbours, friends and members of the couple’s church helped with the work. Hubert himself regularly joined the crew, assisting with the renovation and cleanup.

The family’s church community also brought a donation from a local charitable organisation, adding another layer of support for the couple.

“It was one of those moments that reminded us why we do what we do and a moment we’ll never forget,” the brothers said.

Anne receives news about chemotherapy

While the renovation was underway, Anne received an important update from her doctors. She had originally been told she could begin chemotherapy within one or two weeks, but she wanted to start sooner.

“I said, ‘No, ASAP, as soon as possible,’” Anne recalled. She soon received a call confirming that treatment would begin that Thursday.

“One week, God answered the prayers,” she said. As Anne prepared for chemotherapy, the brothers continued transforming the couple’s home.

‘It’s better than perfect’

After weeks of work, the renovation was finally complete. When the couple saw their transformed property, they were visibly overwhelmed.

“It’s better than perfect,” they said while thanking the team. The brothers said they had enjoyed every moment spent at the house and were grateful that the project had brought them together.

“We enjoyed every moment spent at this house. All the work we did, it was a pleasure for us,” they said. “Most importantly, we’re glad we met you guys.”

Before saying goodbye, the brothers promised to stay in touch and continue supporting Hubert and Anne.

As Anne prepared to begin her cancer treatment, she remained hopeful about what lay ahead.

“I’m going to be well,” she said. When the brothers encouraged her to keep believing, Anne replied: “I know I am. God’s in it.”
